The second day of training for the AIA Men’s soccer Spain trip went very well.  Commencing the day, we had a devotional discussing the Great Commission, and the significance it bears in our lives.  Following that we had a training session where we worked through some formations and tactics.

The afternoon consisted of some personal testimony practice, along with discussing the second AIA principle, which is motivation.  To clarify, motivation is referring to our personal motivations as athletes and humans in sport and everyday life.  Essentially, are we living to glorify ourselves, or to glorify our God and creator?  We were blessed afterward to receive a meal and time of worship from a local church in Xenia.

To end the day with a bang, we won our first soccer match of the trip against a local club team.  We played a little different than normal, in order to help us continue to learn to work well together as a team.  In explanation, we played three thirty minute periods, and gave on call free kicks to both sides.  The most encouraging aspect of the game was the attitude of all of our players, as it was clear that each and every person was not playing for themselves today.  While such a victory is exciting, and we hope to win our games in Spain, we remain true to the fact that we are traveling to spread the Gospel to the people of Spain and glorify God in doing so.

Our coaches told us to prepare for the hardest day of camp… and the wren't kidding. The second day of camp has finally wrapped up. We had a tight schedule today with limited breaks, but our team grinded it out. Our friendships and bonds continue to grow more firm as each training session passes.

Our day started with a morning training session, then went from the field straight to the classroom. We learned more about ministering to people for when we get to Spain, and learned we always have an audience of one. After our time in the classroom we went back to the field for our last session. Although we may be tired physically and mentally, the team continues to stay strong and pour into each other and to grow together. Some of our team got to share an abbreviated version of their testimony, and seeing them accept everyone with such openness was inspiring.

We have a long trip ahead of us, but we have set our eyes on growing in the Lord and letting the Lord use us for a bigger purpose. I am beyond excited to get to know more about this team, and I cannot wait to see how God uses us for His design.

Today begins the first day of training camp here in Xenia and everyone has arrived safely from their various locations around the country. This will be my third consecutive soccer tour with Athletes in Action and each time brings back similar feelings and new excitement.

Even though we have just met each other, there is already a sense of community, friendship, and common purpose that is beginning to form among the group.  We’ve settled into our rooms, gone through a brief orientation, and held our first practice.  We are improving quickly and getting to know each other on and off the field as we begin to form a competitive team. Our days here are filled with as much physical, mental, and spiritual training as possible during the few days we have to prepare for the journey we have ahead of us.

Although the trip is just starting, I have a great feeling about it and I hope that we get to see God move in special ways as we train in Xenia and during our travels in Spain.  For me, these trips are always a huge blessing. I am very excited and thankful to be a part of a trip that I only had a few days to prepare for. Please continue to pray for us, the staff, and the people in Spain!
