Final Day at the Canary Islands

This blog will cover a 3 day span because we may not have internet in Madrid on our trip home.  Last night we finished our last game in the Canary Islands against The Gran Canaria LEB Silver team.  It was an all around effort and we won the game fiishing our trip at 5-0.  Better than being 5-0, the team worked hard and got better everyday.  They grew as a team and acted like professionals on and off the floor.  They treated Bible Study with great importance and strived to take a life lesson and spirtual lesson everyday.  We could not have asked for a better group of student-athletes.  After the game we ate dinner at a nice Italian restaurant with the LEB Silver team.  The players were able to sit with the opponenets, give them a Bible and DVD as well as talk about their experience on the tour.  The coaches were also able to sit together and bounce ideas off of each other and exchange philosophies. We ended our Bible Study session with 7 questions that each athlete answered and shared with everybody.  It was a great way to get the players to talk about their two week experience and bond with each other spirtually one last time.  The rest of the time, our Bible study will be used for one on one meetings with each player to discuss their experience and what lies ahead for the future.

Today was a relaxing day.  On the island it is Gran Canary Day (similiar to Independance Day), therefore everything was shut down from restaurants, to stores and shops. We finished up our one on one meetings which were great learning experiences for both the coaches and the players.  The rest of the day the players had to themselves for walking the island, swimming or just laying in bed and catching up on sleep before our two travel days.  Its amazing to see how close the guys have gotten over two weeks, and how freindships can really take people out of their shell.

Tomorrow we fly to Madrid in the afternoon, and have the evening for dinner and to meet a Real Madrid basketball player who is a Christian and will share his life story and the great things God has done in his life.  It is a great resource to have successful and professional athletes talk about their faith to student-athletes because it gives them a sense of connection and a hope that they can grow in their faith and have a positive effect on people with their faith and not just their basketball skills.  After one night in Madrid, we will make our way back to America through London to Houston.  There we will go our seperate ways being connected by the spirit and the great experiences of this trip.  God has provided an amazing opportunity for us and I truly believe we made the best of it.  We thank God for making all of this possible and putting the right people with us to make this a beneficial and successful trip.
